The tips of the barrels on each grommet are sharper and the material is more rigid, which allows the grommets to cut their own perfect sized holes every time. What are Grommets used in?
Q: What's the difference between a grommet and an eyelet?
A: Not much. Grommets are eyelets. However, the term grommet is usually used to refer to larger eyelets or eyelets with larger flanges.

LUF = Length Under Flange

Grommet dimensions vary between manufacturers for various reasons, such as proprietary designs, different manufacturing techniques, etc.
In general, the more common 'size' names
in the market (i.e. #0, 1,
2, 3, 4, 5), refer only to
an approximate inside diameter.
Not all suppliers follow
the same size name to dimension, so always check inside diameter.
For example, another common supplier calls their 5/8" id grommet a
HIKER has a series of eyelets that vary in outside barrel diameter and Length Under Flange LUF by increments of 1/32". For example, the HS-60 series eyelets are available in an HS-66 version. This means that the eyelet has an outside barrel diameter of 6/32" and a barrel length under flange of 6/32", hence the HS- "66" designation. An eyelet with a barrel od of 8/32" and an LUF of 10/32" would be an HS-810. Please inquire for available sizes and finishes.
Standard grommets are similar to self-piercing grommets in size dimensions and finishes, but are typically made of a lighter guage metal, which requires the holes to pre-punched in the material before the grommet is set. Standard grommets can be more economical for those who only use a few grommets occasionally since they will likely use a hand punch and hammer to cut the holes, or for large volume users that use several thousand per day since they will likely use an electric 'auto-punch' grommeting machine, such as our H-2008. For all users in between, self-piercing grommets are usually more cost effective.
